Researchers Develop A Magnet In China That Is One Million Times Stronger Than Earth’s Core

The 45.22-tesla magnet is just shy of the record for the world’s most powerful magnet.

China reportedly built the world’s strongest magnet for scientific research at a lab in the south east city of Hefei, which is in the Anhui province, a statement by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) announces.

This magnet is said to be roughly the size and shape of a coin, with a diameter of 33mm. Despite its modest size, it produces a steady magnetic intensity of 45.22 tesla, that is in excess of a million times more potent than the Earth’s magnetic field.

World Record Making Magnets

Physicists from the United States National High Magnetic Field Laboratory built a world record-breaking 45.5-tesla field in 2019. But, these professionals did that just with a test magnet that is not put to use in experiments.

The Hefei facility has become the best steady-state magnetic field that can assist scientific research.

The first record was set by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in the United States in 1999. Its hybrid magnet produced 450,000 gauss [45 tesla], and it has kept the record for 23 years.

Producing such powerful magnetic fields requires a great amount of energy, although the benefits could possibly also be world-changing. Researchers around the world are building extremely powerful magnets in a bid to take advantage of the great potential of nuclear fusion power, which could decrease the entire world’s reliance on nonrenewable energies.

At the Heifei facility, a group of physicists used a powerful magnet in the year 2016 to conduct experiments, which in turn led to the observance of an all new physical phenomenon in carbon nanotubes. Their breakthrough has possible uses in the semiconductor market, as research workers are seeking to replace silicon with carbon in chips to generate super-fast low-power computer systems.

Unlocking nuclear fusion and various other advancements

Prof Kuang Guangli, the top expert on this project reported that the team has successfully developed the strongest magnet around the world for scientific research.

Regardless of the fact that the country’s magnetic field research laboratory started off relatively late, it merely took about a decade to make the big step from nobody to a leader, making the China speed for the innovation of strong magnetic technology the report said.
